My birthday is tomorrow (Happy Birthday to me!) and I want a sewing machine. That's right, I'm turning domestic. I didn't think I'd have time to sew but now that I'm graduating in May, I see much more free time in my future! So I need suggestions for an easy-to-use, yet not too elementary sewing machine. I have absolutely NO sewing experience. The closest I have ever come to a sewing machine is when I drop my clothes off at the alterations shop! But I'm a fast learner, and I think I'll really enjoy it. I'm actually sick and tired of the hem coming out of my pants and out of Sipsey's shirts. It drives me crazy and I make up sewing techniques to fix them (by hand). I think the main thing I would use it for in the beginning is to fix stuff like that and then I'd love to make cute little outfits for Sipsey. So tell me what you like or don't like and if you live in the B'ham area, do you know of any good sewing classes? Thanks y'all!
And because no blog would be complete without pictures, here they are:

NO ADVICE on sewing, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY to YOU! And Sipsey is precious, AS ALWAYS!!
No advice here either, just like to say I'm impressed, I've always resorted to hot glue for my clothes repairs!! especially jeans with back pockets, you know the corners always flip up, I just hot glue 'em down! anyway, happy birthday! and let us know which one you choose, sounds like I need to get one too!
I don't know much about sewing, but my mom does. Darby has a great tutorial on her website with sewing info. http://flythroughmywindow.blogspot.com/2008/06/sewing-embroidery-etc.html
Happy Birthday!!!!!
Happy Early Birthday. Mine is in 3 weeks...ugh, I hate getting older.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!
I have a Singer Futura and LOVE it, but it is a sewing and embroidery machine. Singers have made a comeback over the last couple of years, so even though you may not want a machine like mine, I'd definitely look into the other Singer models.
I can't recall any sewing stores right off hand, but it is best to buy your machine from a local dealer if you have one...typically they will offer FREE classes and consistent support. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Sorry, NO ADVICE about sewing from me either, but wanted to give you fabulous HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes!!!
I would love to tell you all about how wonderful my sewing machine is but unfortunately it is still in the box. I'm waiting for all that free time. I'm planning on taking lessons this summer....we shall see. Happy Birthday.
Happy Birthday!!! and when you figure the whole sewing thing out......come teach me!
Sipsey is beautiful as always. Happy Birthday! I can't believe y'all are 27. My mom has a Bernina sewing machine. I having taken French Handsewing by Machine classes and we used the Bernina. It was actually quite simple. I have an ancient Singer, but it works in a pinch. The new models are great and seem to be very "one step" and simple. Susan Br.
